Details

The Teke-Tsaye (or Tsaayi) people of northwestern Congo have a male secret society called 'Kidumu,' which managed key village events like initiations, weddings, and funerals. During these rituals, a 'Kidumu dancer' wore a disc-shaped, flat mask, now mainly used for entertainment. This typical 'Kidumu mask' is an old specimen, almost round with abstract white and red-brown motifs, featuring a short nose, small eye slits, elongated eyes, and a reptile in relief on top. The lower section has a round mouth, cheeks, and holes for attaching the costume. Both the front and back show signs of old use.
