The Kwele (Kwese) people of Gabon and the
Democratic Republic of Congo reside between the
Dja and Ivindo rivers. Social control within their
communities is maintained by the Be’ete Secret
Society, which employs masks during adult initiation
rituals, funerals, and to safeguard the village from
malicious spirits. These masks symbolize protective
bush spirits, with antelope figures being particularly
prominent. Kaolin clay, prized for its white color and
spiritual significance, is almost always used in the
creation of Kwele masks.
